Super Falcons Dominate Zambia with 5 – 0 to Secure WAFCON Semi-Final Berth

The Nigerian Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance against Zambia, securing an emphatic 5-0 victory to storm into the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). In a match that showcased their attacking prowess and defensive solidity, the nine-time champions left no doubt about their title credentials, avenging their previous loss to the Copper Queens in the 2022 WAFCON bronze medal match. This dominant display has solidified their position as a formidable force in the tournament.

From the opening whistle, Nigeria set a relentless pace, with Osinachi Ohale heading home a free-kick just two minutes into the match, catching the Zambian defense off guard. This early goal provided the momentum for the Falcons, who continued to press aggressively. Despite a brief period where Zambia tried to find their rhythm, Nigeria’s defense, led by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, remained impenetrable, maintaining the team’s impressive record of not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament.

The first half saw the Super Falcons extend their lead significantly. Esther Okoronkwo capitalized on a well-taken strike to double Nigeria’s advantage, followed swiftly by Chinwendu Ihezuo, who calmly slotted home a third goal just before the break. These decisive finishes effectively sealed the contest early, leaving the Copper Queens facing an insurmountable deficit and showcasing Nigeria’s clinical efficiency in front of goal.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Nigeria maintaining control and adding to their tally. Oluwatosin Demehin added a fourth goal with another header from a precisely delivered free-kick, demonstrating the team’s strength from set-pieces. Substitute Folashade Ijamilusi then completed the rout in added time with a clinical finish, capping off a truly dominant offensive display that saw five different goal-scorers contribute to the comprehensive victory.

This resounding win not only propelled the Super Falcons into the WAFCON semi-finals but also served as a powerful statement to their upcoming opponents. They will now face either defending champions South Africa or Senegal in the semi-final, with renewed confidence drawn from their exceptional performance and an unblemished defensive record in the competition.
