Super Eagles Beat Egypt On Penalties To Win AFCON Bronze

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday evening, defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time. The match, held in Casablanca, was a tactical stalemate where both sides struggled to find a clinical edge. Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero of the night, saving two crucial penalties from Egyptian stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush to preserve Nigeria’s 100% record in AFCON third-place matches.

Throughout the 90 minutes, Nigeria appeared the more aggressive side, with Akor Adams having a first-half header ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up. Egypt’s “Pharaohs” relied on their signature defensive solidity, frustrating an attack led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. Despite controlling possession, the Super Eagles were unable to break through the disciplined Egyptian lines, leading the game straight to a shootout as per tournament regulations for the third-place fixture.

In the shootout, Nigeria showed “nerves of steel” despite an initial miss by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Clinical finishes from Akor Adams, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi set the stage for Ademola Lookman, who slotted home the decisive kick. The victory marks Nigeria’s ninth third-place finish in the history of the tournament—the highest of any nation. President Bola Tinubu congratulated the team upon his return to Abuja, praising their “resilient spirit” and podium finish in the face of stiff continental competition.
