Shootout Heartbreak: Super Eagles Fall to Hosts Morocco in 2026 AFCON Semis

The host nation, Morocco, secured a dramatic victory over Nigeria in the semi-finals of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. After a grueling 120 minutes of football ended in a 0-0 stalemate at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, the Atlas Lions triumphed 4-2 on penalties. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the hero of the night, saving two crucial spot-kicks from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi. Youssef En-Nesyri converted the final penalty to send the home crowd into a frenzy, booking Morocco’s first final appearance since 2004.

Nigeria entered the match as the tournament’s highest-scoring side, having netted 14 goals in five games, but struggled to break down a resolute Moroccan defense. Despite rare flashes of brilliance from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles were often forced into long-range efforts. Stanley Nwabali kept Nigeria in the contest with several top-class saves, including a diving stop to deny Ismael Saibari in the second half. However, the lack of clinical finishing proved costly as the match slipped into a nerve-wracking shootout.

Nigeria is scheduled to play Egypt in the third-place playoff on Saturday. Following the match, Nigerian fans expressed mixed emotions, praising the team’s defensive grit but questioning the offensive stagnation during the tournament’s most critical juncture.
