Man City Trounce Dortmund, Chelsea and Barcelona Held To Draws

Manchester City secured a comprehensive victory over Borussia Dortmund, while both Chelsea and Barcelona were forced to settle for disappointing draws in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League league phase fixtures. The results highlighted a dominant performance from the English champions and struggles for the Spanish giants and the West London club, which faced challenging away trips.

Manchester City Dominate Dortmund

Manchester City delivered a convincing performance at the Etihad Stadium, defeating Borussia Dortmund 4-1. The home side’s attack was prolific, with Phil Foden shining by securing his first brace since January 2025, scoring two sumptuous strikes in the 22nd and 57th minutes. Erling Haaland also continued his remarkable scoring run, netting his 18th goal in 14 appearances against his former club, while substitute Rayan Cherki added a late fourth. Dortmund managed a consolation goal from Waldemar Anton, but City’s overall dominance, marked by 11 shots on target, moved them into a strong position in the 36-team league phase table with ten points from four matches.

Barcelona Stage Comeback For Thrilling Draw

Spanish giants Barcelona endured a frustrating but thrilling encounter away at Club Brugge, coming from behind three times to secure a 3-3 draw in Belgium. Hansi Flick’s side showed defensive frailties, conceding early goals as Club Brugge winger Carlos Forbs struck twice and set up a goal for Nicolo Tresoldi, capitalising on spaces behind Barcelona’s high defensive line. Barcelona’s recovery was spearheaded by teenage winger Lamine Yamal, who scored in the 61st minute and forced an own goal from Club Brugge’s Christos Tzolis in the 77th minute to level the scores. Despite hitting the woodwork three times, Barcelona avoided a humiliating defeat, though the result leaves questions about their defensive organisation.

Chelsea Salvage Point In Azerbaijan

Chelsea narrowly avoided a shock loss, salvaging a 2-2 draw against Qarabag FK in Azerbaijan. The result left Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca to lament “silly” defending after the five-thousand-mile round trip. Chelsea took an early lead through an excellent finish from Estevao Willian in the 16th minute, but the hosts rallied before half-time. Leandro Andrade equalised after a defensive lapse, and Marko Jankovic converted a penalty in the 39th minute to give Qarabag a 2-1 lead after a handball. Substitute Alejandro Garnacho eventually scored a second-half goal in the 53rd minute to rescue a point for Chelsea, who remain level with Qarabag on seven points after four matches, suggesting a tough fight ahead for progression.

League Phase Outlook

Manchester City’s commanding win significantly boosts their chances of finishing in the top eight of the league phase to avoid a play-off round, while Inter Milan maintained their perfect record with a 2-1 victory over Kairat Almaty in another Wednesday fixture. Conversely, the draws for both Chelsea and Barcelona mean they still have work to do to secure comfortable progress in the remaining matches of the competition, with their recent defensive struggles casting a shadow over their campaigns.
