The Federal Government has cleared all outstanding group-stage bonuses owed to the Super Eagles at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, confirmed on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, that coordinated action between the government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has streamlined foreign exchange processing to ensure the players receive their rewards without further delay. The intervention was prompted by reports that players had threatened to boycott training and travel arrangements for their upcoming quarter-final clash with Algeria due to unpaid allowances for four consecutive wins.
Dr. Uzoka-Anite stated that the government has implemented a “fast-track conversion mechanism” to move the funds into foreign currency, matching the players’ preferences. She emphasized that the measure was designed to prevent a repeat of past administrative disputes that have frequently disrupted Nigeria’s major tournament appearances. The minister revealed that the final transfers to the players’ domiciliary accounts were already in progress and were expected to reflect within 24 hours. This move has been seen as an attempt to maintain the team’s focus as they advance deeper into the knockout stages of the competition.
The bonus dispute had threatened to overshadow the Super Eagles’ impressive on-field performance, where they have emerged as one of the tournament favorites. Sports analysts had warned that a strike could derail the team’s morale before the high-stakes match against the North African side.
