Edem Offiong quits national table tennis team at 37

Edem Offiong has announced her retirement from the Nigerian national table tennis team at 37. 

In a post on Instagram on Thursday, Offiong said she would be exiting the international stage “to explore new horizons”.

Offiong added that she would nurture “young table tennis talents, inspiring the next generation to surpass my achievements”.

“A proud 5-time Olympian, I bid farewell to the national team,” the post reads.

“I extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who’s supported me on this incredible journey: family, friends and well-wishers. Your unwavering love and encouragement mean the world, from humble beginnings in Bayside to international recognition. Thank you, IOC, NOC, NTTF, and I thank God for talent and the opportunities it brought so much as been achieved.

“I’m grateful I bow out and remain committed to the table tennis community, empowering young stars.”

Offiong is one of Nigeria’s most successful female table tennis players.

She is a multi-medalist at the African Games table tennis event, winning six gold, four silver, and five bronze medals for Nigeria over her 20-year career.

Offiong made her Olympic debut in Athens in 2004 and qualified for every edition after that, including the 2024 Games in Paris.
