I am tempted to ask this question because since the advent of party politics in Nigerian in May 1999, I don’t seem to see anything that changed the fortunes and conditiins of lives of ordinary Nigerias.
The dilapidated states of roads across Nigeria are still there. Unemployment of graduates and other qualified applicants has reached such an alarming and embarrassing proportions. Today the ordinary citizens are living from hands to mouth. There is nothing that adds to the life expectancy of ordinary citizens. In every areas of life citizens are finding themselves in more and more poverty.
The political class cares only for themselves and their families and cronies. Wealth gotten from bad governance are being displayed by these heartless politicians and their cronies to the irrigation and annoyance of good governance. In good democracy where leaders have conscience, the opposition parties play very crucial roles in acting as checks on the excess of those in power.
But in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. Those who are supposed to be in opposition are in most cases in conspiracy with the corrupt elements in power to even destroy the opposition parties. There is too much easy and unrestricted access to the commonwealth of Nigerians by Nigerian politician for their selfsh use. The struggle by the opposition political parties is not over policies and programmes that can better the lots of people but the capturing of political power to further punish and emasculate the people from their governments at all levels.
Most of the people in the current government in Nigeria were once in the opposition political parties. They were very passionate about good governance while in opposition. Today power is in their hands and good governance appears to elude us and very far from the people. There are no good and motorable roads in the country. Most of our roads are death traps. There are no good health care facilities. People are dying every day because of lack of basic healthcare services.
The security situation has assumed very disturbing phenomena in our land. There is no government transport system to help the poor. In all of these Nigerians are the victims of bad governance. Instead of pursuing governance for the good of the people Nigerian politicians in most cases have left governance for their selfish interests in the arts of governance. Nigerians are interested in seeing their country developed like other countries. Nigerians want peace to enjoy their lives. We are almost in the state of nature where the mighty is always right.
I think Nigerians want to see leaders who will put an end to medical tourism and who will build world class hospitals to attract people to seek medical treatment in Nigeria. Nigerians need government that can give them jobs and create job opportunities for the youths. Nigerians are not interested in any leaders whose only purpose of seeking political power is to acquire unexplained wealth and primitive acquisition of property for himself and families.
We need government that cares for the people. The kind of politics that only take ownership of thieves and the thieves can do no wrong must stop. Any country where employments are being sold by some of those in the system should worry any decent mind. Nigerians need liberations from the oppression of their governments at all level.
Nigerians freedom from fear and rights to good and affordable health care facilities, motorable roads and other social amenities which have been, are being and are likely to continued to be breached, unless the opposition politicians in subsequent elections are prepared to change and do something different from what I see them do since 1999 when we got civilian government in power.
