Senate Honour Late President Buhari

Nigeria’s Senate observed a solemn moment of silence and held a special tribute session on Wednesday, July 24, to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13 at age 82 in London  . Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele delivered the motion, praising Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade, military background, and service to the nation, and urged the Federal Government to immortalise his legacy with a national monument  .

Senators from all parties commended President Bola Tinubu and the Council of State for orchestrating a befitting state funeral and for renaming the University of Maiduguri in Buhari’s honour. They resolved to carry forward his commitment to national unity and to expedite pending bills aimed at strengthening governance and security—the hallmarks of his administration  .

As the nation wraps up its week of mourning, the Senate’s tribute underscores the importance of cross-party solidarity in remembering a leader whose tenure was defined by discipline, resilience, and an unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential. The red chamber’s resolutions will be forwarded to the Executive for implementation, ensuring that Buhari’s contributions are enshrined in both law and national memory.
