The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially debunked reports claiming that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, has been suspended. In a statement released on Friday, January 9, 2026, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, clarified that the proceedings—initiated on Thursday, January 8—are “fully on course” and progressing strictly in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution. George described any rumors of a halt as “cheap blackmail” and misinformation designed to mislead the public.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, has reportedly transmitted formal notices of allegations of “gross misconduct” to both the Governor and Deputy Governor. The Assembly is currently awaiting their formal responses, a mandatory step under the constitutional timeframe before the process can move to the investigative stage. This move marks the third attempt to impeach the pair since 2023, following several collapsed peace agreements brokered by the Presidency in previous years.
The charges against Governor Fubara, signed by 26 out of the 31 lawmakers, include eight specific counts of gross misconduct. Key allegations involve the unconstitutional withdrawal and expenditure of public funds without a 2025/2026 appropriation bill, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and illegal appointments made without legislative confirmation. Additionally, the House accused the executive of disregarding a Supreme Court ruling concerning legislative financial autonomy and withholding the salaries of House staff and the Clerk of the Assembly, Emeka Amadi.
