Veteran journalist and broadcaster Reuben Abati has strongly criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, asserting that he lacks the moral standing to comment on the character of others. In a video clip shared on Tuesday, Abati questioned why the media continues to provide a platform for Wike to disparage political opponents when his own role in damaging the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is widely documented.
Abati, a former presidential spokesman, stated unequivocally that Wike is “not in a position to talk about character” and that he should first question his own. He highlighted Wike’s recent attacks on political figures such as Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan, and Nasir El-Rufai, suggesting a pattern of behavior that undermines his own credibility. Abati specifically pointed to Wike’s comment that Obi lacked the character to return to the PDP, a statement the journalist found hypocritical given Wike’s own history.
The Arise TV anchor also accused Wike of being primarily responsible for the destruction of the PDP. He argued that the FCT Minister had no right to dictate the party’s future or discredit other members after his past actions. This public rebuke adds another layer to the ongoing political drama involving Wike, who has been in the spotlight for his combative political style and his ongoing feud with the PDP leadership.
Abati’s comments suggest that he believes Wike’s influence is based on a flawed foundation and that his public pronouncements should be viewed with skepticism. By questioning Wike’s moral authority, Abati is challenging the narrative that the FCT Minister has attempted to create, portraying himself as a principled figure in Nigerian politics. The veteran journalist’s intervention brings a fresh perspective to the political discourse, shifting the focus from Wike’s latest pronouncements to his history and personal conduct.
