The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has issued a stern warning, stating that Nigeria is “daily moving towards full-blown dictatorship, insecurity and worsening hunger.” The statement, signed by the Forum’s Director General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, on behalf of its chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed, was released to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Maulud. The governors used the occasion to express their concerns about the current state of the nation, claiming that Nigerians are increasingly disconnected from the essential services they deserve. They pointed to what they described as an “abuse of power,” a “compromised judicial system,” and failed economic policies that have led to widespread poverty and unemployment.
While the PDP-GF used the occasion to lament the current state of affairs in the country, the statement also included a felicitation with Muslims on the celebration of Eid-el-Maulud. The governors urged Nigerians to reflect on the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, emphasizing his message of peace, tolerance, and service to humanity. They encouraged citizens to use the day as a reminder of the values that should be upheld, such as public service with accountability, humility, and the pursuit of truth, in order to rebuild the faith of Nigerians in their country.
The warning from the PDP governors comes amid a series of political and social challenges facing Nigeria. The opposition party has been a vocal critic of the current administration, raising concerns about the handling of security issues and the economy. The statement is the latest in a series of public pronouncements from the forum, which often serves as a platform for PDP governors to voice their collective concerns and offer policy alternatives.
The forum’s director-general, in his statement, urged leaders to take urgent action to address the deteriorating situation, which he believes is characterized by a “failed economic policy.” He said that the PDP governors are concerned about the “intolerable hunger, poverty, and unemployment” that citizens are experiencing, and he called on the leadership to restore trust in the country. He also referenced the importance of brotherhood and understanding, and the need to work together towards a more harmonious society.
