Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has promised that his administration will implement the Supreme Court’s verdict after thoroughly reviewing its Certified True Copy (CTC).
Recall that the apex court, in its ruling on Friday, invalidated the local government election held in the state on October 5, 2024.
In a statewide broadcast on Sunday, Fubara disclosed that he consulted with his legal team, who anticipate receiving the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to upholding constitutional principles and acting in compliance with the law.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to nullify the October 5, 2023, LG elections, the governor had directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume immediate control of the 23 local government councils across the state.
He directed the outgoing council chairmen to formally hand over their responsibilities to the HLGAs by Monday. He clarified that the civil servants would manage council affairs until the State Electoral Commission conducts fresh elections.
The governor urged residents to remain calm and reassured them of his administration’s dedication to good governance and adherence to due process.
In a separate ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from disbursing funds to the Rivers State government until it rectifies what the court described as a “flagrant disregard for court orders.”
The judgment, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, saw the five-member panel unanimously dismiss a cross-appeal filed by Governor Fubara challenging the legitimacy of the state House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.
The court also ordered Amaewhule and other elected members of the assembly to resume their legislative duties immediately.
