More Than Words

MORE THAN WORDS By Uworuya Ogieva Paul

A most recent experience I had with my colleague was his use of such condescending language in our discuss which angered me as I have dealt with bullies all my life and  realized how small minded they were. I would have ignored and moved on until yet again His use of same language on another colleague. It seemed an intentional attack on the intelligence of another and taking a position of superiority in a conversation. I would have loved to investigate what he planned to gain by intentionally throwing out words that would hurt or infuriate even the lowest simpleton in a conversation that should be bordered by the etiquette of polite language.  I came to the realization that not many people know the impact of words or have maturity and mastery of language in a discuss. You should forgive such persons if you have been a victim or change if  you are a regular perpetrator after reading this article. The alternative is to remain in your folly and make unnecessary enemies while waiting for the sure to come consequences.

The Nigerian news space has been awash with the recent arrest and subsequent grant of bail to the unrivalled activisit, Dele Farotimi who is intentional in swinging his words at the rich and powerful in the legal and political corridors. In someone’s language mere words but powerful enough to spite someone who wields great powers however corruptly used and abused. A few words used by for President Olusegun Obasanjo in a conversation with a thought friend placed him under arrest and at the barrels end in the military junta of General Sani Abacha. Words used in jest and cruel intention to siphon funds from unsuspecting victims of the internet in dating scams have resulted in suicides. Child bullies in schools have with words pushed victims of bullying to near suicides and other forms of self harm. Even amongst friends, families;couples , parent, their kids and siblings have had to stay away from conversations with each other to avoid mental health breakdowns and trade of unkind words.

In the vast landscape of human communication, words wield a powerful influence. From the whispered encouragement that propels an athlete to victory, to the stinging critique that echoes in our minds for years, the impact of language can be profound and enduring. Words have the power to uplift, inspire, and motivate, but they also have the power to hurt, damage, and destroy. It’s important to remember the weight that our words carry and to use them wisely.

Think before you speak or post online, as once words are out there, they can have a lasting impact on others. Choose kindness, empathy, and positivity in your words, and you’ll be amazed at the positive impact it can have on those around you. Spread love and positivity through your words, and let’s make the world a better place.

Positive language can be a catalyst for change and growth. Encouraging words can boost morale, foster resilience, and inspire creativity. In educational settings, students who receive affirmative feedback are more likely to develop a growth mindset, tackling challenges with a belief in their ability to improve. Consider the case of Maya Angelou, an American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist, whose teachers’ positive affirmations helped her rise from a traumatic childhood to become one of America’s most celebrated poets. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of encouraging words.

The Devastation of Negative Language

Conversely, negative language can leave lasting scars. Bullying, criticism, and derogatory remarks can erode self-esteem and lead to long-term psychological effects. In the digital age, cyberbullying has become a rampant issue, amplifying the reach and impact of harmful words.

In professional environments, the language used by leaders can shape company culture and employee satisfaction. Positive reinforcement and constructive feedback can enhance productivity and foster a collaborative atmosphere. On the other hand, harsh criticism and negative communication can lead to a toxic work environment, high turnover rates, and diminished employee well-being.

Research in neuroscience and psychology has explored how words affect our brains and bodies. Positive words can stimulate the release of dopamine and serotonin, the “feel-good” chemicals, while negative words can trigger stress responses. This biological reaction highlights the tangible impact of language on our mental and physical health.

In conclusion, Words are not merely a means of communication; they are a force that can shape our thoughts, emotions, and actions. As we navigate our daily lives, it is crucial to recognize the power of our words and use them thoughtfully. By fostering a culture of positive communication, we can create environments where individuals thrive, relationships flourish, and communities grow stronger.
