President Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri After Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The announcement was made on Thursday during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session convened to pay tribute to the departed elder statesman, who recently passed away at the age of 82. This move signifies a major recognition of Buhari’s contributions to the nation, particularly his commitment to the North-East region where the institution is located.

The decision to rename the university came as part of a solemn and reflective FEC meeting, where President Tinubu led top government officials, including the leadership of the National Assembly and members of the Buhari family, in honoring the former president. During his tribute, President Tinubu lauded Buhari’s life as one of “quiet courage and unwavering service to Nigeria,” highlighting his discipline, patriotism, and moral uprightness throughout his public life.

President Tinubu described Buhari as a “patriot, soldier, and elder statesman” who dedicated his life to national unity and progress. He reflected on Buhari’s military years, acknowledging his role in preserving Nigeria’s unity, and praised his democratic legacy, noting how he led with restraint and integrity. The renaming of the University of Maiduguri, a prominent federal institution, serves as a lasting memorial to Buhari’s legacy, particularly in a region that significantly benefited from his focus on security and development.

The University of Maiduguri, established in 1975, has been a beacon of education in the North-East, serving as a critical institution in a region often affected by insurgency. Renaming it after former President Buhari, who was instrumental in the fight against Boko Haram and other insurgent groups in the area, is seen by many as a fitting tribute to his efforts in restoring peace and stability to the region. The university will now carry the name of a leader who prioritized national security and public service.

This posthumous honor for former President Buhari underscores the significance of his contributions to Nigeria in the eyes of the current administration. While every leader’s legacy invites diverse interpretations, the renaming of a key national institution solidifies his place in Nigeria’s history. The move is expected to evoke various reactions across the country, but it undeniably marks a new chapter for the University of Maiduguri under its new name, Muhammadu Buhari University.
