The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced a significant milestone in its student loan scheme, revealing that applications for the programme have now surpassed one million since its official launch. This figure represents one of the largest uptakes for a government-backed social intervention programme since the beginning of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The milestone was achieved in less than a year after the programme was launched on 24 May 2024.
Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Director of Strategic Communications at the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, issued a statement on Sunday confirming the achievement, which she described as a testament to the scheme’s strong national traction and growing public trust. The agency’s data indicates that a substantial sum of over N116 billion has been disbursed to date. This funding is distributed to students across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide and covers both institutional charges and upkeep allowances.
Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director of NELFUND, commented that the landmark achievement reflects the success of the President’s Renewed Hope agenda in expanding equitable access to higher education for the nation’s youth. Mr Sawyerr stated that crossing the one-million application mark is more than a statistic, symbolising “renewed hope for a generation of Nigerians determined to rise above financial barriers to education,” and attributing the success to visionary leadership, sound policy design, and the collective efforts of stakeholders.
The agency has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to continuous improvements in service delivery, with the goal of ensuring that every qualified Nigerian student can access education funding transparently, efficiently, and with dignity, irrespective of their background or location. NELFUND has also been keen to stress that the student loan programme is non-discriminatory, designed to benefit Nigerians across all religious and ethnic backgrounds, thereby helping to foster national unity through the provision of equal learning opportunities.
The statement concluded by reiterating NELFUND’s core mission, which is to ensure that no Nigerian is denied the opportunity to learn, grow, or contribute to national progress simply because of financial limitations.
