Femi Otedola Donates ₦4 Billion for Augustine University Engineering Block

Billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Femi Otedola, has announced a further donation of ₦4 billion to Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, for the construction of an Electronics Engineering Block. Mr Otedola, who serves as the university’s Chancellor, made the announcement during the institution’s convocation ceremony, stating the new donation would fund the delayed second phase of the Faculty of Engineering, which has experienced cost increases due to inflation. This latest project is designed to complement the existing Dame Doja Otedola Faculty of Engineering, named in honour of his mother.

During his address, the Chancellor formalised the commencement of the project by presenting a cheque for ₦500 million to the contractor, following the signing of the construction contract earlier in the day. He expressed hope that the construction would be completed in time for the university’s 2026 convocation. This gift follows a series of significant contributions by Mr Otedola, positioning him as one of the most prominent private donors to any university in Nigeria.

This generous pledge builds upon previous massive support for the Catholic-owned institution. In 2024, the philanthropist donated ₦3.7 billion to fund the Faculty of Engineering complex and other critical infrastructure projects on the campus. Additionally, he has also committed funds to student welfare, including a donation of ₦1 million each to 750 students of Augustine University to support their education and alleviate financial pressures on their families.

The Chancellor took the opportunity during the convocation to commend the university’s steady progress over the past decade and reaffirmed his commitment to its mission of providing “integral education for a borderless world.” He also acknowledged and thanked the institution’s founders and leadership for their dedication and stewardship. Mr Otedola also congratulated the new Vice-Chancellor, Anthony Alaba Akinwale, and the new Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council, Winifred Akpani, pledging his continued support for their leadership.

In a gesture of encouragement, Mr Otedola presented 1,000 copies of his best-selling book, Making it Big, to students, faculty, and management staff. He urged the graduands to uphold the university’s motto, Pro Scientia et Moribus—”For Knowledge and Character”—advising them to be “global in outlook but local in impact; be courageous in conviction but humble in service” as they venture into the world. His ongoing financial contributions, channeling billions of naira into academic infrastructure, scholarships, and student welfare, continue to transform Augustine University into a model of Catholic higher education in the country.
