Kuwait Intercepts Iranian Drones; Mossad Alleges Assassination Plot; Gulf Coast Storm Makes Landfall

Kuwait’s military said its air defence systems intercepted and engaged Iranian drones on Friday as explosions were reported in parts of the country, underscoring the widening regional fallout from the renewed conflict between the United States and Iran. Air raid sirens sounded across several areas as authorities urged residents to remain indoors while security forces monitored the evolving situation.

The latest incident came amid continued exchanges between Tehran and Washington following days of retaliatory strikes that have drawn several Gulf states into heightened military alert. Kuwaiti officials said the country’s defence network successfully responded to multiple aerial threats, though assessments of the attacks were still underway.

Meanwhile, Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, disclosed details of what it described as an Iranian-backed assassination plot targeting senior Israeli political and security officials. According to Israeli authorities, the alleged operation relied on operatives recruited outside Israel to carry out attacks. Iranian officials have not confirmed or responded publicly to the allegations.

The developments add to growing fears that the Middle East conflict could expand beyond direct confrontation between Washington and Tehran, drawing more regional actors into an increasingly volatile security environment.

In the United States, attention was also focused on severe weather after Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall along the Louisiana Gulf Coast with sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding concerns and disruptions across parts of the southern United States. At the same time, thick wildfire smoke from large fires burning in Oregon spread across several American states, reducing air quality and prompting public health advisories.

On Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader John Thune indicated that additional sanctions targeting Iran would be incorporated into a broader Russia sanctions package currently before Congress, signalling that Washington is preparing further economic pressure alongside its military response.

With fighting continuing across the Gulf and diplomatic efforts showing little sign of progress, international observers warn that the crisis is entering a more dangerous phase, carrying significant implications for regional security, global energy markets and international diplomacy.
