Iraq and the United States have signed 48 agreements, memoranda of understanding and partnership deals aimed at significantly expanding economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries during Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s official visit to Washington.

The agreements span key sectors including oil and gas, electricity, technology, telecommunications, agriculture, healthcare, education and infrastructure, reflecting Baghdad’s push to diversify its economy and attract long-term foreign investment. Major American companies involved include ExxonMobil, Shell, Halliburton, GE Vernova, KBR and Starlink, alongside several other multinational firms.

A major component of the package focuses on strengthening Iraq’s energy sector through new investments in oil production, electricity generation and pipeline infrastructure, including projects designed to improve export routes and reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. Technology cooperation also features prominently, with agreements to expand satellite internet services and digital infrastructure across Iraq.

Prime Minister al-Zaidi described the agreements as a turning point in Iraq-US relations, saying his government is pursuing an “open-door policy” to encourage international investment and transform Iraq’s vast natural resources into jobs and economic prosperity. US President Donald Trump also welcomed the expanding partnership, expressing confidence that the agreements would create opportunities for both countries.

The wide-ranging deals are expected to strengthen Iraq’s post-war reconstruction efforts, modernise critical infrastructure and deepen economic ties between Baghdad and Washington as both countries seek to shift their relationship beyond security cooperation toward long-term investment and development.
