Opposition Party Urges National Assembly to Assess President’s Fitness Over Alleged Appointments Crisis

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the National Assembly to investigate what it described as a growing constitutional crisis within the Presidency, alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lost effective control of his administration. The opposition party made the call in a statement released on Saturday, 18 July 2026, following reports of a leadership dispute at the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA).

The statement, signed by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, argued that the reported refusal of an official allegedly removed through a presidential directive to vacate office raises serious concerns about the authority of the President and the integrity of executive decision-making.

According to the party, the BCDA controversy is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern suggesting that official presidential appointments and dismissals can allegedly be ignored without consequence. The ADC said this creates uncertainty over who is truly exercising the constitutional powers of the Presidency.

The opposition party also referred to the earlier controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), describing it as another example of what it called institutional confusion within the Federal Government. It further cited the suspension of the Cybersecurity Levy, the withdrawal of the Expatriate Employment Levy, and other policy reversals as evidence of an administration struggling to maintain consistency and authority.

The ADC argued that frequent policy changes and conflicting government directives have weakened investor confidence, confused the public service, and diminished public trust in government institutions. It maintained that when official announcements are repeatedly reversed or disputed, confidence in the Presidency itself is undermined.

The party therefore urged the National Assembly to exercise its constitutional oversight responsibilities by determining whether President Tinubu remains fully capable of discharging the duties of his office and whether the constitutional powers vested in the Presidency are being exercised solely by him.

It also demanded answers regarding who authorises appointments within the Federal Government and whether any unelected individuals are influencing executive decisions behind the scenes.

The ADC concluded that if the President is unable to assert full control over his administration and ensure that his directives are implemented, the appropriate course would be for him to step aside in the interest of the country.

As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency had not issued an official response to the allegations contained in the ADC’s statement.
