Nigerian Students Threaten Nationwide Protests Over Alleged Tax Reform Discrepancies

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the newly signed tax reform laws scheduled for 1st January 2026. In a statement released on Monday, 29th December 2025, NANS President Olushola Oladoja described the implementation process as “fundamentally flawed” and “constitutionally questionable.”

The student body argued that there has been insufficient public enlightenment regarding the scope and long-term implications of the reforms. They also accused the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) of an elitist approach that has left the majority of Nigerians in the dark about how the laws will affect their livelihoods.

Beyond a lack of public awareness, NANS raised serious concerns over allegations of legislative tampering. Representative Abdussamad Dasuki recently alleged that the version of the tax laws gazetted for the public differs from the harmonised bills actually passed by the National Assembly. NANS warned that implementing laws whose authenticity is under investigation undermines the integrity of the Nigerian state.

The students’ body demanded an immediate postponement until the National Assembly concludes its review and the clerk re-gazettes the correct version. Failure to comply with the 14-day window will result in coordinated nationwide protests by the student population.
