Senate President Godswill Akpabio Allegedly Hospitalized in London Following Collapse

The Senate President of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, is reportedly receiving medical treatment at a hospital in London, United Kingdom, after a serious health crisis earlier this month. Reports indicate that the Senate President collapsed on December 10 and was subsequently flown to the UK in a private jet provided by billionaire Aliko Dangote for urgent overseas care. This development has forced the third-highest political officer in the country away from his official duties at a critical time when the legislature is engaged in vital fiscal planning sessions. Sources within the National Assembly have characterized his condition as serious enough to require an extended stay abroad for observation and treatment.

Akpabio’s absence was notably felt during the recent interactive sessions on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), where he was represented by Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi. This marks the second time within a relatively short period that the Senate President has been rushed to London for medical attention, which has ignited fresh concerns regarding his physical capacity to lead the upper legislative chamber. Some medical experts attending to him have reportedly suggested a significant reduction in his professional workload to facilitate recovery.

The Senate President’s last major public appearance was on December 9, just one day before his reported collapse, when he presided over a plenary session that approved the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin. During that session, he emphasized regional stability and the collective responsibility of ECOWAS nations to resist coups and unrest. Following his departure to London, several senators are said to have traveled to the UK to visit him, reflecting the gravity with which his colleagues view the situation. Logistics are reportedly being managed by his aides to prepare for his eventual return to the country, though no official timeline has been provided by his office or the Senate leadership.

The situation has created a vacuum in the legislative leadership during a period of intense budgetary and economic debate. The MTEF and FSP sessions are foundational for Nigeria’s fiscal year, and the Senate President’s inability to lead these sessions personally underscores the impact of his health challenges on government operations.
