Russia has announced that it is closely following developments surrounding reports of possible United States military action in Nigeria, following recent comments made by former US President Donald Trump. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova disclosed Moscow’s position on Friday during a press briefing, in response to a question about the situation.
Ms Zakharova used the briefing to urge Washington to respect international law and act responsibly in its approach to global security matters. She stated: “We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms.”
Her comments came after President Trump announced on 1 November that he had directed the Pentagon to prepare options for possible military measures against terrorist groups in Nigeria, citing the need to protect Christian communities. This threat of US intervention has drawn attention from multiple foreign capitals.
The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman was also asked about Kazakhstan joining the Abraham Accords, the normalisation agreements between Israel and various Arab and Muslim nations. On this separate diplomatic development, Ms Zakharova maintained that Moscow currently sees no need to comment. Kazakhstan had confirmed its participation in the accords on Friday, following a phone call between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and President Trump.
