The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), an umbrella group for the Nigerian Muslim Community, has called for a diplomatic approach and constructive dialogue to address the recent tension between Nigeria and the United States. The call came in a statement issued in Dutse on Friday by JNI’s Secretary in Jigawa, Malam Muhammad Babangida.
The statement expressed “deep concern over recent statement by U.S. President, Donald Trump, which was based on misinformation regarding the treatment of Christians in Nigeria.” This assessment by the JNI mirrors the Nigerian government’s official position, which has sought to counter the narrative of a targeted ‘Christian genocide’ as portrayed by the US administration.
Mr Babangida stated that the “expressed threat of military action against Nigeria necessitated the call for diplomatic engagement with the U.S. President and the American Congress.” The objective of the dialogue would be “to highlight the complexities of the security situation in Nigeria and efforts being made to protect all citizens, regardless of faith,” as well as to showcase the government’s commitment to addressing the root cause of the violence.
The JNI urged President Bola Tinubu to expedite action by leading a high-powered delegation to engage the U.S. administration for a frank discussion about the situation in the country. This recommendation for a direct, high-level approach underscores the seriousness with which the Muslim community views the potential diplomatic and security fallout.
Finally, Mr Babangida called for collective national unity to support the government’s efforts. He added that “Nigerians must stand firm in unity, pray and work sincerely towards a better nation, while demanding government to intensify efforts to fight insecurity and assure safety of all citizens.” He concluded with a prayer for the nation’s leaders to be granted the wisdom and strength to approach the situation earnestly.
