The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has dismissed claims that she has resigned from her position.
Her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, refuted the speculation on Wednesday, February 19.
“I’m in the office. The speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from.
“This is the handiwork of mischief makers working for the impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who have been commissioned to spread fake news on social media to mislead the public and maintain pressure on the current leadership of the House. We are aware of this, and it will not succeed,” the aide stated.
The aide clarified that the recent resignation rumour originated from a fake resignation letter first spread by paid bloggers on Monday, February 17.
“I urge members of the public to ignore such reports, as they are fake, unfounded, and without any iota of truth,” Ajiboye said.
The clarification follows widespread reports claiming that the newly appointed Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, had resigned.
A circular dated February 17, 2025, allegedly issued by Meranda, had been circulating for two days, suggesting she had stepped down. However, a closer review of the letter revealed that it was unsigned.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa by a majority of the lawmakers.
In response to his ousting, Obasa challenged the decision, asserting that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the Assembly.
Speaking to his supporters at his official residence in GRA, Ikeja, Obasa, who represents Agege, insisted that his impeachment was not conducted following due process. He argued that Meranda’s election as Speaker was unlawful, rendering his removal invalid.
Obasa further claimed that a fake mace was used to install Meranda and alleged that hundreds of police officers stormed the assembly on the day of his removal to intimidate his supporters.
He also accused security personnel of surrounding his official residence on the same day, preventing his family members from leaving the premises.
Vowing to reclaim his position, Obasa announced plans to challenge his removal in court.
Meanwhile, the state lawmakers urged Lagos residents to disregard Obasa’s statements, cautioning him against actions that could destabilize the political atmosphere.
