In a groundbreaking move, Lasbat Meranda has emerged as the first female Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa amidst corruption allegations .This development marks a significant milestone in the state’s legislative history, with Meranda becoming the eighth Speaker and the first woman to hold the position since Oladosu Oshinowo’s tenure began on October 2, 1979.
Meranda’s journey to the speakership began in 2015 when she was first elected as a member of the Lagos House of Assembly, representing Apapa. She has since served three terms as a lawmaker, demonstrating her commitment to public service .
Before entering politics, Meranda worked as a political aide in Apapa Local Government Area from 2008 to 2014. Her professional experience also spans the private sector, where she managed an oil and gas company.
Born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos, Meranda attended Randle Primary School and Anglican Girls Grammar School. She later pursued undergraduate and graduate studies at Lagos State University and the University of Lagos, respectively.
As a loyal member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Meranda has consistently toed the party line, earning her a reputation as a dedicated and principled lawmaker. With her historic appointment as Speaker, Meranda is poised to leave a lasting impact on the Lagos State House of Assembly.
