German Chancellor Merz Calls Putin ‘Most Serious War Criminal of Our Time’

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has intensified his criticism of Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, labeling him “perhaps the most serious war criminal of our time.” The statement was made in an interview with German TV channel Sat.1. While Merz has previously accused Russia of “serious war crimes” and “terrorism against the civilian population,” his latest characterization of Putin personally is new. He emphasized that there is “no room for leniency” when dealing with war criminals.

The comments come amid ongoing discussions about a potential peace settlement for the war in Ukraine. Merz has been a vocal proponent of providing long-term security guarantees for Ukraine and has criticized Putin’s perceived unwillingness to engage in meaningful negotiations. He and French President Emmanuel Macron have also pushed for secondary sanctions against countries that support Russia’s war machine.

Merz’s strong language reflects growing frustration among European leaders over the slow progress of peace talks and Russia’s continued aggression. His stance is consistent with the broader European Union position, which has accused Putin of undermining diplomatic efforts with continued missile strikes and attacks on civilian targets. The EU has also vowed to introduce further sanctions against Russia and increase military aid to Ukraine.
