Speculation is mounting in Abuja that President Bola Tinubu is under significant pressure from United States policymakers to adopt a Muslim-Christian ticket for his 2027 re-election bid. Sources indicate that the U.S. has expressed a strong preference for religious balancing at the federal seat of power to ease sectarian tensions. This development has reportedly put the position of the current Vice President, Kashim Shettima, under review as the administration weighs the strategic benefits of a more diverse executive branch.
Among the high-profile names being touted as potential running mates are Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese and former Speaker Yakubu Dogara. Also mentioned is the current Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Christopher Musa, who is seen as a unifying figure capable of addressing both security and religious representation. While APC governors are largely backing Shettima’s retention, a faction within the presidency is reportedly considering Muslim alternatives like Nuhu Ribadu or Abdulaziz Yari if the religious balance mandate is not fully adopted.
The push for a Muslim-Christian ticket is seen as a response to the controversial same-faith ticket of 2023, which faced heavy criticism from various civil society groups. Analysts suggest that an “incentive” or alternative high-ranking role would need to be created for Shettima should he be replaced. The administration’s response to these diplomatic signals will likely shape the internal politics of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party prepares for its mid-term conventions later this year.
