African Development Bank Approves Nine Million Dollar Health Grant

The African Development Bank Group has approved a 9.57 million Dollar grant to strengthen emergency preparedness and health resilience across the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Announced on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, the funding is specifically targeted at training frontline health workers and improving national surveillance systems to detect and respond to future disease outbreaks. This financial intervention comes at a critical time as the region grapples with a massive surge in cholera and other climate-related health challenges. The grant will be administered through the SADC Secretariat to ensure a harmonised approach to regional health security and technical capacity building.

The primary focus of the grant is the establishment of a regional “Health Emergency Hub” that will coordinate the deployment of medical personnel during crises. A significant portion of the funds will be allocated to the procurement of laboratory equipment and the digitisation of health records in rural districts across the fifteen member states. By enhancing the speed of diagnostic testing, the programme aims to reduce the response time for emerging pathogens from weeks to hours. Bank officials stated that this investment is a key component of their broader “Strategy for Quality Health Infrastructure in Africa,” which seeks to close the continental gap in pandemic readiness.

Beyond immediate outbreak response, the 9.57 million Dollar package includes provisions for the specialised training of 2,500 epidemiologists and community health officers. These professionals will be equipped with the skills necessary to conduct advanced contact tracing and manage large-scale vaccination campaigns in hard-to-reach areas. The African Development Bank has emphasised that the sustainability of the project depends on the commitment of national governments to maintain the new systems after the initial grant period. Collaborative efforts are also underway to link this regional network with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in Addis Ababa.
