Labour Party leader Peter Obi shared a deeply personal encounter on Tuesday via social media, detailing a conversation with Chidera Ugwokeba, a 24-year-old Nigerian-American nurse. While on a flight to Lagos on January 4, 2026, the young graduate recounted a “traumatizing” experience at a government-owned hospital where her sister was refused treatment for a bleeding wound until payment was made. The nurse reported seeing other patients in critical condition left unattended and noted a lack of basic hygiene, including the use of unsterilized blood-testing equipment.
Obi used the story to argue that Nigeria is “not poor, but poorly governed,” highlighting what he described as a severe distortion of national priorities. He pointed out that the ₦60 billion spent on refurbishing the National Conference Centre and the Vice President’s residence could have purchased 400 brand-new ambulances—roughly 11 per state. He also criticized the ₦300 billion spent on a new presidential jet, suggesting that the same funds could have built over 4,000 primary healthcare centers across the country. According to Obi, the nurse’s lament reflects the “sadness and confusion” of many young Nigerians who wish to serve their country but are deterred by systemic rot.
